Standings Day Gecko

Description

Standings day geckos (Phelsuma standingi) are an arboreal gecko that is diurnal and omnivorous. They are mostly found in southwest Madagascar. They’re also known as “banded day geckos” They enjoy tropical forest environment and, as a purely arboreal species, spend the most of their lives far above the earth.

Although some can grow bigger, Standing’s day geckos typically reach lengths of 8 to 10 inches (or 20 to 25.4 cm). Based on the stage of life, this species has extremely distinct appearances. Young birds have a yellow-green head and a body that ranges in color from mint green to aqua blue. Dark brown stripes and bars are heavily layered on top of these colors.

Standings Day Gecko for sale require an enclosure that is sizable enough to allow them enough room to hunt, explore, and generally engage in their normal behaviors. They require a terrarium that offers plenty of climbing area because they are also arboreal. The minimum suggested enclosure size for a single Standing’s day gecko is 24″L x 24″W x 48″H / 60 x 60 x 120 cm or comparable. This is because Standing’s day geckos can grow up to 10″/25cm long (and occasionally greater).

Being omnivores, Standing’s day geckos require a well-balanced diet of both plant-based and animal-based foods to meet their nutritional needs. They mostly consume insects, flower nectar, and fruit juice in the wild. This diet can be replicated for pets by combining meal replacement powder and live insects in the right proportions.

Age determines how frequently Standing’s day geckos must eat:

Children (0–6 months): daily insects, CGD every other day
Insects, subadults, and adults (>6 months) 2-3x weekly, weekly CGD
Crested gecko diet (CGD) must be provided via a feeding ledge erected on a wall; it cannot be placed on the floor. In my opinion, magnetic mounts are superior to suction cups.

Although Standing’s day geckos are big enough to handle without harm, it’s important to keep in mind that, like other day geckos, they still have incredibly thin skin. I advise keeping interactions with your gecko to offering bug prey with your hands or soft-tipped feeding tongs or dabbing CGD on your finger for them to lick. Your gecko might walk onto your hand or arm if it gains enough confidence in you. But don’t ever grab it!

Before attempting to introduce yourself to the gecko, give it at least two weeks to adjust to its new home.
