Description
Black and White Chuckwalla for sale (Sauromalus ater) is a lizard species in the iguanid family. Granite Chuckwalla and Coal-black Chuckwalla are two other names for it. Here are some important qualities and facts about the Black and White Chuckwalla:
Black and white appearance Chuckwallas are stocky lizards that are huge and robust. Their body is flattened, and their head is huge and blocky. They are named after their unique black and white coloring. The body is primarily black, with white or grayish-white patches or bands on the head, limbs, and tail. Their skin is rough and grainy.
Adult Black and White Chuckwallas can reach lengths of 16 to 20 inches (40 to 50 cm), with males often being larger than females.
The Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of southwestern North America, including sections of California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah, are home to this species. They prefer rocky terrain, canyons, and desert washes.
Habitat and Behavior: Black and white Chuckwallas thrive in rocky areas. They are generally rock-dwelling lizards with great climbing abilities. They have powerful limbs and sharp claws that allow them to easily cross the rocky terrain. When threatened, Chuckwallas expand their bodies and wedge themselves into crevices, making it harder for predators to extricate them.
Their diet consists primarily of plants, including as leaves, flowers, fruits, and stems. They are herbivorous and have digestive systems that are specifically designed to consume plant material.
Black and white Chuckwallas are oviparous, which means they lay eggs. Females often lay 3 to 10 egg clutches in cracks or burrows. The eggs hatch after around two to three months of incubation.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Black and White Chuckwalla as a species of least concern. Certain populations, however, may experience limited challenges as a result of habitat loss, degradation, and collecting for the pet trade.
If you want to maintain a Black and White Chuckwalla as a pet, you need know that they have special maintenance needs.
