Description
Rennell Island Mangrove Monitor (Varanus juxtindicus) is a type of monitor lizard found in the Solomon Islands. It is sometimes referred to as the Hakoi Monitor. It is a member of the subgenus Euprepiosaurus, which includes the canopy goanna, peach-throated monitor, Kalabeck’s monitor, and others. This species is only found on Rennell Island, one of the Solomon Islands’ smaller islands. It is most common around Niupani.
Rennell Island monitors can grow to be up to 150 cm long from snout to tail. The pattern and coloration on its back are quite similar to V. indicus, but the lack of blue coloration distinguishes this species from the other members of the subgenus Euprepiosaurus. It has no obvious bands on its tail or on the side of its skull. The neck of V. juxtindicus is devoid of any discernible pattern. It only possesses pigment at the tip of its tongue. The first part of its tail is circular in shape and lacks a keel.
