Description
Varanus spinulosus, often known as the Solomon Island spiny monitor, Isabel monitor, or spiny-neck monitor, is a monitor lizard species. It is only found in the Solomon Islands archipelago, but it has also been found on Santa Isabel Island, San Jorge Island (Solomon Islands), and Bourgainville Island (Papua New Guinea).
This species has many traits with the V. indicus species complex’s mangrove monitors, but it also exhibits a number of distinctive physical traits. Its little body scales are all highly keeled and conical in shape, which is a characteristic that distinguishes it from all other monitor lizards and gives it a spiky scale texture. It has rather large eyes and a back covered in three to four rows of brilliant yellow dots.
They feed on megapode eggs and on fish, often emerging from the bush. In the intertidal zone at low tide, it is possible that they would search for dead fish.
