Description
Brazilian Rainbow Boas (Epicrates cenchria cenchria) – commonly known as BRBs – are regarded for being one of the most attractive snakes available in captivity, with exquisite patterning and scales that reflect light into a rainbow of colors, earning them their name.
This South American species is relatively easy to care for in captivity, so as long as you’re willing to put in the effort to get the right setup, they’re suitable for beginners to snake keeping – but if you’re not sure about a larger bodied snake, you might want to consider some of our other popular colubrids, such as corn snakes or king snakes.
We advise a tank that is 4 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet for a single adult Brazilian Rainbow Boa, but if you want to build a spectacular show vivarium and add more height with lots of climbing branches, it will be useful! On both the hot and cold ends of the tank, you should add branches and vegetation as well as a sizable water bowl and a number of safe hiding places. You could even want to think about getting up to 6 feet in length or 3 feet in depth for a very huge female or a pair. The minimum is 4 x 2 x 2, and you can go as big as your room will allow.
Infants can be kept in a starting configuration until they have a good handle on eating and are big enough to not pose an escape danger. This species has a tendency to be a little reserved, but with a well furnished vivarium, they can typically transition into their permanent enclosure at an early age.
