The name “Red and Black Chuckwalla” comes from its striking colour. Adult males have black or dark gray bodies with brilliant red or orange patterns on their flanks, tail, and throat. Females and youngsters are frequently mottled with a combination of black, gray, and brown colors. They have a huge, flattened head and a stocky body.

These lizards are predominantly herbivorous, eating a variety of plant materials such as leaves, flowers, fruits, and even cactus. They are well suited to desert conditions and can obtain water from their diet, allowing them to live in locations where water is scarce.

Red and black Chuckwallas are rock-dwelling lizards that live in rocky environments such as canyons and desert slopes. They are adept climbers, and their muscular limbs and claws allow them to scale steep places.
