Description

Black-throat monitors are Africa’s second longest and largest monitor lizards. They are the largest of the four rock monitor subspecies. Adult monitors can grow to be 7 feet long and weigh more than 60 pounds. Males are generally larger than females. They are enormous in size and, as a result, are unpopular among lizard keepers. It would need a lot of area to house them.

To fit the general hue of their habitat, they are often dark grayish-brown or tan with yellowish or white patterns. Every lizard has distinct markings with mottled patterns and colors. As the lizard ages, its markings may occasionally disappear, but they are still discernible. The lizard has larger markings on its back and smaller ones around its legs and side parts of the body. The patterns are arranged in bands toward the tail.
